Minii Ayam - Conservation Through Story

Reconstructing a stalled expedition film into a purpose-driven conservation documentary

Mongolia’s giant Argali sheep are among the most sought-after animals in the world. For decades, unchecked harvesting and subsistence hunting drove populations into serious decline. The solution was controversial but effective. A limited number of high-value hunting permits now fund conservation programs, protect habitat, and create real economic incentive for local communities to preserve the sheep rather than rely on them for food.

Mike Axelrad, a Houston-based investor, lifelong hunter, and conservationist, secured one of those rare permits. The intention was to document the journey not just as a hunt, but as a story about conservation in action.

The original production struggled. Critical moments were missing. Audio was compromised. After an extended post-production effort, the project was shelved without a finished film.

I was brought in to evaluate whether the material could be rebuilt into something meaningful.

This was not a traditional edit. It required reconstructing the story from the ground up. I shaped a clear beginning, middle, and end from fragmented footage, building tension, setbacks, doubt, and eventual success into a cohesive arc. Visual gaps were resolved through careful sequencing and reframing. Technical issues were corrected through restoration, grading oversight, and audio repair. To give the film emotional clarity, I worked directly with Mike to develop and record a reflective voiceover that positioned the experience within the broader context of conservation rather than trophy.

The result was a 12-minute documentary that reframed the expedition as stewardship. Distributed through Amazon Prime and digital platforms, the film generated significant engagement, expanded awareness of Mongolia’s conservation model, and helped inspire continued participation in regulated hunting programs that directly fund wildlife preservation.

What began as an unfinished production became a focused conservation film with lasting reach.
